Hire Mark Cappis!

Radio is more than a job. It's a lifestyle.

My name is Mark Cappis, and I want to work in radio. That's been my dream since I was 10 years old. I first got to realize it when I went to Augustana University and promptly volunteered for the campus radio station. When school was done, I decided to go pro, and it's a quest I've been on ever since.

The journey led me to NAIT, and their prestigious Radio and Television - Radio program. In addition to all the skills I learned in the classroom, I spent a good chunk of my free time using those skills on my after-hours radio show. My practicum took me to Cold Lake, and the Lakeland's Classic Rock, 95.3 K-Rock. While there, I got to try my hand in everything: announcing, production, writing, promotions, news, janitorial...you name it, I did it. I graduated with honours in the spring of 2005, and now, my journey takes me to your radio station.

But it's one thing to tell you what I can do. Come, let me show you.

Announcer
I've got almost six years of experience behind a microphone. I know how to use SCOTT Systems and DCS. But, more importantly, I know it takes hours of prep to make a spectacular show - hours I'm willing to spend.

Producer
I know the ins and outs of Adobe Audition (and its older cousin, Cool Edit), Sony Sound Forge, and SAW Basic Studio. In fact, my first task at my practicum was to teach everyone how to use SAW Basic Studio, as it was still all new to them. Whether it's your latest imaging package or a single-voice-over-music for Mom's Cookies, I only know one thing: make it sound good.

Writer
If the multitudes of articles on this website aren't proof enough, I love to write. While studying at NAIT, I was able to write spots for a variety of clients; from NAIT's on-campus businesses, to a few non-profit organizations in the city. While I was at K-Rock, they let me try my hand at some imaging. On top of that, at every school I went to, I wrote for the school paper.

Promotions
A radio station is nothing unless you can drum up some new listeners. Back at Augustana, I was the bad-boy, doing all kinds insane stunts and even entering into cross-promotional deals with the school paper. At NAIT, my powers were harnessed, I'm now able to design and manage events with the best of them.

Testimonial
They really loved me at my practicum, and they were sad to see me go. Just the hazards of doing my practicum at a small market station...no room to keep me on when it was done. But, they did give me this token of appreciation on my last day.

My Résumé
Of course, these are just the Coles Notes. Here's the whole story.

Job Interview FAQ
These are the questions that I always get in a job interview. I'm sure you have them after reading my résumé. Let me answer them.

Wow! You have degrees in math and physics! Why the %$#@ do you want to work in radio?

Well, after four years of university, I reflected upon how I spent my time. All my work time was spent in a laboratory, all my free time was spent at the radio station. I looked at that and said, "Ya know, I just had more fun at the radio station." Don't get me wrong. I'm very proud of my degrees. But, when all's said and done, you just have more fun in a radio station than you do playing with plutonium.

Wow! You spent a year in Japan! What was that like?

I spent a year teaching English with the AEON Corporation. It was truly an experience, and I learned quite a bit. Part of my job was to sell my English school to prospective students. I was the company's representative, doing whatever I could to make that student right in front of me choose MY English school. I told bad jokes, I laughed, I sang, I gave out stickers, and ran contests. I did everything you do in the promotions department - only I did it through a language barrier.
