Chaos In A Box
The Christmas Special Catalogue
December 25, 2007

Way back in 1986, my family was still enthralled with the technological development of the VCR.  When Christmas came, my mother was hit with a brainstorm:  let's tape the Christmas specials!  The first one was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  I really ran with this idea of taping Christmas specials.  Whenever one came on, I'd tape it.  I finally decided to end this collection around 1998, when I filled a third video tape with Christmas specials.

Naturally, as this collection was building, I needed some way to keep track of everything I had taped.  So, around every second holiday season, I'd sit down, go through the tapes, and catalogue everything I had already recorded.  I did it every second year because something would always happen in those two years and I'd lose my catalogue.  But not this year!  I'm breaking out the tapes and I'm making one last catalogue.  And this time, it's going on the website, so I'll always be able to pull it up.

I don't know if I'll always need to pull this up.  You just know that as soon as DVD-R technology becomes widespread and affordable, I'll start all over with DVD.  So, let's get to it!

Tape I

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 0:00:00

'Twas the Night Before Christmas 4:54:10
Bluetoes the Christmas Elf 5:17:05
A Wish for Wings That Work (first half) 5:25:14

A Wish for Wings That Work is spread over two tapes because improper cataloguing led me to believe that I didn't have enough room on the tape.

And such happy memories as I catalogue!  How long has it been since you've heard a TV announcer say, "Next, on an all new episode of The Campbells," or "Tune in tomorrow night for a very special episode of Degrassi Junior High."

Tape II
Name Counter Reading
A Claymation Christmas Celebration 0:00:00
The Night the Animals Talked 0:25:35

A Charlie Brown Christmas 4:29:10
A Garfield Christmas 4:58:28
A Wish for Wings That Work (second half) 5:21:00

Is it just me, or are there not as many animated Christmas specials as there used to be?  That, or they're just not showing them anymore.  Too bad, because there's a lot of great animation in some of these.

And now, the final tape.  This last one was made in one big push in the mid-90s.

Tape III
